SUMMARY & FIGURES
The global goal of the CYBERLEGs Plus Plus (CLs++) project is to validate the technical and economic viability of the powered robotic ortho-prosthesis developed within the framework of the FP7-ICT-CYBERLEGs project as a means to enhance/restore the mobility of transfemoral amputees and to enable them to perform locomotion tasks such as ground-level walking, walking up and down slopes, climbing/descending stairs, standing up, sitting down and turning in scenarios of real life. Restored mobility on a daily basis will counteract the progression of comorbidity and/or physical decline, and reduce the mortality risk.
The final CLs++ ortho-prosthesis will be fully modular: each robotic active module will be conceived as a standing-alone device whose combination will be selected to optimally match the specific user needs deriving from their residual movement ability and required movement assistance. Each of the robotic modules will be able to connect to the Wearable Sensory Apparatus through a wireless link, and run the Cognitive Control Unit in order to (i) detect the intended movement, (ii) run the bioinspired control system, (iii) establish a bidirectional link with the amputee, and (iv) mitigate the risk of fall.
The CLs++ ortho-prosthesis will be developed with the ultimate goal to be used by the end users in scenarios of real life without any support/supervision from engineers, medical doctors and/or physical therapists. The actual usability of CLs++ ortho-prosthesis as a means to restore and enhance the amputees’ locomotion abilities in scenarios of activities of daily living will be validated through two multi-center clinical studies.
CLs++ Innovation Action is expected to deliver a comprehensive assessment of the socio-economic perspectives deriving from a possible adoption of CLs++ in the standard medical practices, along with a strategy to bring CLs++ technology on the market of wearable powered robots for both movement rehabilitation (clinical use) and assistance (personal assistance in daily-life scenarios).
